One of Gangwon-do’s most representative festivals, Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is taking place until February 2 in the area of Hwacheoncheon Stream. The festival has great winter activities including trout fishing, bare-hand fishing and more on the frozen Hwacheoncheon Stream.
The main event, trout ice fishing, has a separate ice fishing location for international visitors. The most popular event is bare-hand fishing, in which participants change into clothes provided by the festival and jump into a pool barefoot to catch trout. If that’s a bit too much, visitors can participate in various winter sports such as sledding, bobsled and curling, as well as take pictures of trout-shaped lanterns at the Lantern Street Festival.
Visitors can reach the festival venue by taking an express bus, however it is recommended for international visitors to take the foreigner-exclusive shuttle bus that travels between Seoul and the festival grounds. Advance reservations are required for the shuttle bus; English & Chinese interpreters will be on the bus for passengers’ convenience.
