The Gangneung International Film Festival (GIFF) will take place for the first time from November 8 to 14 at Gangneung Arts Center, CGV Gangneung, Shinyeong Theater, and the areas nearby. GIFF is a non-competitive film festival that will be showcasing a total of 73 international films produced by directors from 30 different countries.
The festival’s program consists of several films divided into themes, such as “Cinema & Literature” and “Masters & Newcomers.” The Cinema & Literature features selected classic Korean literary films from the 1960s to 1970s and movies dedicated to women and writing, whereas the Masters & Newcomers pays tribute to directors Kore-eda Hirokazu and the late Choi In-ho. The Masters & Newcomers program also showcases the Korean premiere of 10 films that made it into ACID Cannes of the Cannes Film Festival from 2017 to 2019.
The opening ceremony of the festival will present a “cine-concert” of the world’s first female director Alice Guy-Blanche’s work “Falling Leaves (1912),” performed by the Gangneung Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert will be followed by an opening film “A Little Princess (2019),” directed by Huh In-moo. Other noteworthy events and activities include a VR Lounge and the showcase of “100X100,” a collaboration of 100 works directed by 100 directors with a running time of 100 seconds each.
Tickets can be booked online through CGV website or on-site at Gangneung Arts Center and Shinyeong Theater.
